Wherever we wander, often the best way to live like a local is to eat like one. When out of the comfort zone of your own bed, town or country dining takes on a whole new dimension: I remember coffee on Las Ramblas as La Boqueria market was opening, watching Barcelona awaken as we were on our way home from Sonar festival; sitting with Gallic gentlemen smoking ciagrellos and supping espressos at 7am in Uzès; being filled with rye bread, sausages, paté and delicious fruit compotes in a local’s apartment in Poznan. Having once made an early morning dash from a monastery in Croatia (long story), we watched apocalyptic thunderstorms as we drank bitter hot chocolate and freshly baked bread in a tiny café by the sea. It doesn’t have to be sophisticated to be great.
